What is NSO Full Form? A Detailed Guide

National Science Olympiad is the most prestigious program in Asia that is now open to the students of grade 1 to grade 12. The reputable organization Science Olympiad Foundation is responsible for conducting National Science Olympiad tests for all primary, secondary, and higher-level students who want to participate in creative activities. 

The National Science Olympiad has usually been conducted at two primary levels. All the participants are ranked based on the scores obtained in their tests. There is some relaxation for lower-grade students. Like students of grades 1 and 2 do not need to take 2nd level examination, and this level will be only launched for grade 3 to grade 12 students as they are little mature and responsible to handle pressure.

What is NSO Abbreviation?

Due to its different meanings and abbreviations, people often confuse NSO with other words. But when you say NSO regarding Olympiads, then remember it’s always National Science Olympiads. This is the full form of NSO. However, in terms of technology and other words, NSO may be associated with other meanings.

National Science Olympiad- An Overview:

Now you must be wondering what NSO is, and what’s the purpose of launching such a contest?

Well, The National Science Olympiad is the creative development of SAASTA. It is their best flagship project. The project was first launched in 2005 and now it’s been 56 years, it is offering an amazing opportunity to all the learners of grades 1 to grades 12. It gives them an exciting chance to compete and grow in the world of science with other competent learners from different SADC countries like Namibia, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe.

The competition is based on a final examination in science such as Life Sciences and the Physical system. Students who obtain the highest scores will be awarded laptops and tablets.

The basic objective of this program is to identify talented students who can do good in life. It aims to encourage excellence in the world of science as well as stimulate more confidence and interest in different scientific areas. The programs inspire the young generation to consider their career in growing fields of Science and Technology, so that they can make their country proud in the world.

Generally, when the vacation starts in June or July, a group of 100 people who have excelled and shown some potential in the Olympiad examination, are invited to take part in the Science Focus Week that comprises different elements such as stimulating lectures, motivational speeches, excursions, industry visits as well as fun events. 

However, this year, due to increased cases of Covid-19, the authorities have decided that they won’t launch any Focus Week and there will be no award-giving ceremony until the cases surge.

Why is NSO Organized?

The famous program National Science Olympiad is organized on yearly basis. The purpose to launch this contest is to encourage and motivate students so they can strive for a better future and hence develop a stronger and deeper understanding of complicated scientific facts and data. This will not only increase their reasoning abilities, but their creative, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills will also be polished.

Every student from grade 1 to grade 12 is invited to participate in the program. The unique test is organized by higher education authorities so they can assess the levels of students’ creativity, understanding, knowledge, creativity, and power of reasoning.

It makes students stronger, and they can easily learn every matter of life from a different perspective. They can develop a positive and optimistic approach and a belief that everything is happening for a reason, and they should be stronger.

How Can You Enter the Program?

There are some easy steps to enter in NSO program, such as:

  • Go online and visit the official website to find the link
  • Pay entry fee of Rs. 35 (per student)
  • The closing date of the entry fee will be June 04, 2021.
  • There will be some special arrangements made for students who cannot pay the entry fee. The school administration needs to apply before the closing date.
  • You can contact the higher authorities if you have any issues or concerns.

What will be the Selection Process?

As explained above, NSO is conducted in two major levels, such as Level 1 and Level 2.

Top 500 international ranks, as well as the best 10 state ranks, can participate in level 2 exams.

NSO Level 1: 

In the first level of the National Science Olympiad, the program will be organized in the respective schools during their regular hours.

  • Level 1 is based on a written objective type assessment of 1-hour duration that comprises 35/50 Multiple Choice questions for students of grade 1 to grade 12.
  • This test will be based on Science and Mental Ability questions.
  • Separate question papers will be assigned to each grade.
  • The basic medium of their test will be English.
  • CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabus will be chosen for organizing the test papers.
  • The exam will be held during regular school hours.

NSO Level 2: Now the qualifiers for the second round will be:

  • Top 5% of top-level students who appeared for the 1st level National Science Olympiad.
  • Each section is based on a separate weight age, so every student will be scored on its weight age.
  • Statewide top 10 students were class-wise.
  • Class topper will be chosen from at least ten students who appear in the exam and must score more than 75% qualifying marks.

Winners:

After winning the test, the students who scored higher will be awarded merit certificates, gold medals, and cash prizes.
